I cannot shut down the unit, and it has been locked up since 9:25 pm EDST.

jojack6200, try this “Performing a hard reset on your Kindle Fire may resolve intermittent issues like a frozen screen, battery issues or trouble downloading content to your Kindle Fire. Allow your Kindle Fire to charge for approximately 30 minutes, then try the following steps. To perform a hard reset on your Kindle Fire, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and then release. After the device has completely turned off, press the power button to restart your Kindle Fire. If your Kindle Fire is still unresponsive, try charging your Kindle Fire before trying to reset the device again.” from here.

If none of the above works you can always factory reset it. Hold power until it shuts down. Hit power. When The amazon screen or whatever your first screen is comes on hit volume up (could be volume down depending on version) and power. Hold it. That will give you an options screen. The only one you really need is the factory reset. After you do it the device will restart. It will appear as nothing happened. Let it sit for few minutes. The screen will change and go through the initiating process and you will have a like new device.
