I get critical battery message
@philmarusa something like this you want to start off with a new battery. Replace the old one Kindle 2 Battery Replacement If that does not resolve the issue you will have to check the charging port. It is possible that it has failed. Use this guide Kindle 2 Motherboard Replacement to get to it and use a multimeter to chek the port. Of course, you can get a small USB ammeter and see if your Kindle pulls any power and start diagnosing from there.
