My home button has been erratic for awhile, rarely requiring a second click before the iPod responds and takes me to my homescreen. Suddenly, the home button stopped working at all. Out of desperation, I decided to press on it again and again, and after 30 - 50 presses, it will bring me back to the homescreen. I hope I’m not further damaging my iPod! This iPod is only 4 months beyond the 1-year warranty, and I would rather not spend the $200 + that Apple estimated it would cost to send in and repair. Any suggestions??
iPod Touch 4th Generation Home Button Ribbon Cable Replacement Sounds like your issue, if you are technically proficient enough to do the work yourself, I suggest to open it up and make sure it is just not off center before purchasing a new controller.
On the ipod touch 4, there is a small switch that is glued/taped to the frame assembly. This part is very small, and inexpensive. However, it does require you to take apart the ipod to some degree. Once the front screen/lcd are removed, you will see a steel fram underneath. There are a number of screws that hold the frame down, they are NOT the same size, so make sure you keep track where they go.. There is a guide in the ipod repair section of this site that will show you how to do this. If this is too big an adventure for you, you can always ask some of the guys on here if they can fix it for you, assuming there are no other problems. This is about a 35-40 min job for someone that knows what they are doing..
