Hi guys, So, I replaced the battery on my A1398 Mid-2015 Retina MacBook Pro and now I can’t turn on the laptop on battery. Also, while it does turn on with the power adapter, it doesn’t charge the battery, and if I remove the power adapter, the computer shuts down. Any ideas? I remember having a similar issue when replacing the battery on an A1502, but I can’t remember how I solved it lol… Things I’ve already tried (with no success unfortunately): different chargerSMC and PRAM resetSafe Mode I feel like it’s probably something I’m missing. Something small. But I’m just not sure what else to try. I kinda doubt the battery is damaged in some way, it’s a new battery after all…but also, I have no other idea right now. What would you recommend? Screenshots from the menubar and Coconut Battery below.
Also, from System Report.
For what I can tell, the system does see the battery… It just doesn’t wanna charge it, for some reason. Update (01/06/2022) I managed to take some pictures of the board. I’m definitely not a specialist, but it doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the board. Also, I’ve tried the old battery again, and…works like a charm. So I don’t think it’s the board. But I can’t figure out what am I missing, if it’s on the battery side (as it seems to be). Also, forgot to answer your previous question, but I took some pictures of that too, the connector itself seems ok (for as far as I can tell)…so does the one on the board. You can see all the pictures below. :) Looking forward to hearing from you.
Update (01/05/2022) Aaalright folks. So the new battery came in today (yeah, it took a lot longer than anticipated) and…yeah, it’s powering the computer up (without the charger plugged in) and charging just fine. So yes, it was the battery indeed. A few interesting things: in Catalina, the battery automatically showed up with Condition: Normal. In Monterey (probably Big Sur, as well), it showed as “Service Recommended“ in Monterey, to make the battery show up correctly (Condition: Normal), I had to do a NVRAM/PRAM reset using Alt/Option + Command + P + R + Power Button (from a shutdown state). I thought doing an SMC reset would actually do this trick but nope, resetting SMC didn’t help. Resetting NVRAM/PRAM did. Just though it might be interesting to mention. Thank you very much @flannelist for your feedback!
I agree. It does look like the system is detecting information from the battery and that the battery itself “should” be in good health. But that information comes in on different lines than the battery would charge/discharge through. If you have not already, I would reseat the battery connector and inspect all of the pins just to make sure there’s nothing in the conector, on either the battery side or theboard side. But realistically this sounds more like something on the board which regulates charge function is not working properly. Many of them are located to the right of the trackpad connector. Some pictures may be helpful if this is the case, just to be sure nothing got nudged accidentally or damaged during the replacement process. I know it’s quite an ordeal, particularly if you took the logic board out.
