I’m having a new solid state drive installed in my iMac (late 2010 model). They want to charge $70 to install the OS and I know I should be able to do that myself. I purchased the machine from someone and wasn’t given any cds for the OS or anything. Is it possible to install the OS on my iMac without them and, if so, how?
You can get a disk image download from the mac site. Here is link that may help. Click or tap on the blue link. I have also included the phone number for Apple. They were very helpful and free. They helped me with a 7 year old computer. I had the exact same situation. Good luck. 1-800-442-4000 https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1884?view…
Here’s how to change the drive on a 21" 2010: iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 Hard Drive Replacement Get a USB to SATA adapter,[linked product missing or disabled: IF107-108-1] Hook up the old drive externally and boot from it. Go to Disk Utilities and format the new drive. If you’ve ever done a system upgrade the installer should be in your applications folder. Run it on the new drive, then you can update or upgrade to the latest system via download from the App store. Now we need to address possible fan issues according to the drive you plan on installing.
