My macbook pro was overheating so decided to open it up and reapply thermal compound to the cpu. That all when smoothly but upon closing up the unit I noticed a burning smell coming from the machine. I opened it up and realised that some components near the lvds had literally come off. I can’t find the schematics for this machine and I have spent countless hours hunting and no joy . Its emc is 2554 . Has anyone every had this problem and how did they over come it? Seems a pity to just buy a new one. The machine makes all the noises on startup. Any help would be great appreciated. Cheers
Looks like you got components burnt L9004 and C9015 they are on the line of PP3V3_LCDVDD_SW 3.3v but instead of just replacing them you need to find out why and how they burned in the first place it may do it again you probablly broke one off one the components by accident which is a good chance then a simple replace of the components may do the job you need also to take voltage from that 6 legged chip sort of close to the Plink Fuse U9000 also go to capacitor C9012 and see if your getting 3.3v there. You could alternatively start with replacing Inductor L9004 which is a 402 package @ 120 ohm 1.5amp and cap is a 10uf 6.3v in a 603 package you can get them from digi key or mouser also pins 2 and 3 look a little dark on the lvds connector you may need to inspect and touch them up a bit. If your really serious about repairing this search a1278 no backlight etc on youtube you find some professionals in action it’s 2 part really the hunting troubleshooting and the physical reworking of the board.
John, It is the circled one in the attached photo.
