So I’ve seen this problem on a few forums. The phone works fine unless you make a call. When you do, the mic and the speakers will not work. They function with any other application in the phone. The suggested fixes are firmware update (some claim this has worked) and the other is a reflow of the chip that handles the incoming calls(?). I know by the teardown which chip handles the sound on the board, but if anyone has encountered and fixed this issue before, could you give a brother a hand on where to aim the heat?

The firmware update did resolve the issue.

The problem for me was in my SD card. I had tried everything before I tried that, and it seemed the more I tried, the worse the problem got. It had been an intermittent problem, so sometimes things would seem to fix it but weren’t actually fixing it. I tried: -Restart (no fix) -Restart after removing battery (no fix) -Restart after removing SIM card (no fix but appeared to work at first) -New SIM card (no fix but appeared to work at first) -Phone calls to my service provider (Bell Mobility - Canada) They said contact Samsung -Phone calls to Samsung … obviously they said contact Bell Mobility -Factory Reset … numerous times (no fix) -Remove SD Card (fix) -Install new SD Card (still fixed) Somewhere along the line, something was installed on my SD card or some corruption on the card made the phone do this. Although I’ve likely permanently lost some data, my phone works as a phone again.

This is really easy to fix! Download SoundAbout from app store and set ‘phone call audio’ to ’earpiece’. I experienced the problem after flashing CM12 lollipop rom on my GTI505, everything was fine at first and then suddendly audio during phone calls stopped working. Hope this will help future googlers :).

SOLUTION: Samsung Galaxy S4 no audio sound during phone call. For me it was a bad SIM Card Reader or Module IF. But it could be a bad SIM card so try a new SIM card before doing this repair or at least take it out and in. My Service Repair Statement said it replaced two things: Part Number Description GH59-13279A Unit-SIM SD SOCKET; SGH-I377, 10-0013-0278 GH59-13111A MODULE-IF SUB FPCB(SGH-I337);SGH-I337,10 Called 800-726-7864 told them what the symptoms were and that the support line said it was the SIM Card Reader and they gave me a quote of $70.36 and seemed confident that the phone would be fixed. Sent to Samsung Repair Facility in Texas, total cost $70.36, and was without it for 9 days. It’s been working for 2 weeks now with no problems. First I took it to an AT&T Service Center and all they really did was try a new SIM Card, next called Samsung Service 888-987-4357 and went thru a series of tests and they said it was a bad SIM card reader and gave me the repair center number. Symptoms: No audio / sound during a phone call on either side (caller or receiver) Call connects everything is working, just no sound. Sound for all other functions and apps works (music, voice recording, video audio). You can tell it is going to happen when you make a call and you don’t hear any ringing just a click sound then nothing. If you hear ringing then the call will work. Rebooting usual works for a call or two. Messing with some settings may get it to work for a period of time. But for me none of any of the other suggested fixes worked except rebooting and turning airplane mode on and off but it only fixed it for awhile. I have used the phone for 1.5 years and never had a single hardware problem, didn’t have it heavily loaded (RAM or Memory). It just started one day out of the blue and drove me crazy.

Hi guys. Found that my sister in law had this problem. We solved it by turning off power saving mode after she noticed it happened when her battery got low. I hope this can help someone else :)

I had the same problem. I tested a wifi phone app and it worked so it wasn’t a hardware issue. So then I downloaded another phone dialer app, the 2GIS Dialer (FREE) which then feeds through the phones dialer and it works. Don’t ask me why or how. Jay, Nov 5 2014

Hello, recently I bought the same phone , the problem was that sometimes the call timing, but my partner and I do not hear .I dissasembly phone and all connections between parts. After assembled it. No problems .Connections of the ribbon cable between the parts are cause. And mostly strikes!!!! THE phone working fine and stable!!!

“FIXED"I had this same problem my S4 phone will dial but no sound no mic. But when i hooked it up to blue tooth it worked threw my blue tooth device. I took it apart checked all my connections made sure everything was connected still no sound no mic. So i bought a new phone but it still bothered me that my old phone was not working properly since i had nothing to loose i took my old phone apart removed the main board removed camera lens that was attached all down to the bare board . Then i heated up my toaster oven as hot as i can get it . Placed main board flat on a piece of parchment in oven for 8 min . Took it out let it cool down put it all back together and now my old phone works perfect. I’m guessing that there must have been a bad soldering spot on the board and the heat from the oven fixed it. Been 3 days and it still works perfect.

I know that this post is very old, today I have flashed my moto g6 play (sprint) with a ROM to upgrade my cellphone from Android Oreo to Android Pie due to the long delay on getting an officiall update, after the flash everything works as expected except the calls: the microphone and speaker seems to not working only during calls, after some research, I found that the “modem” image is the responsible of my problem, so I flashed the modem image from the old ROM stock (Android Oreo) and now It works. Note: I do not know if this will work with another version/model, I’ve experienced this situation with a moto g6 play (sprint).

Headphone hole, clean it. If no go open phone and see if it’s fkd.

If the earpiece and speaker not working only and only during calls while it is working fine with other apps then problem is in your SIM CARD and not in your phone .REPLACE IT WITH NEW SIM CARD AND GET YOUR ISSUE RESOLVED .

I bought my phone on April 12th and from day one had problems when calls come in I can’t hear party and they can’t hear me. Tmobile had me remove sim card and replace. This resolved the issue for 8 to 10 hrs and same problem. Finally I read somewhere to clear cache and cookies (don’t know why) but after doing that it’s been over a week and no more issues. Before it was happening 4 to 5 times a day. Hope this helps.

I took out my battery, put it back in, and it worked again. It was tremendously frustrating to have someone call and there was no sound or I tried to call my voicemail and heard nothing.

Fixed: I tried many of the suggestions that I found online (sim card, SD card, reset, load new firmware, etc) to fix my son’s S4 - none of these suggestions fixed the problem. The mic, ear peace, and speaker all work fine sing VOIP dialers, I felt that the issue had something to do with the firmware (BIOS) or software. Since I had already reloaded the firmware, I factory reset the phone. During the factory setup process, I decided to log into the phone using my own Google account and restore my applications. This solved the problem. I hope this information helps others. Good luck!
