So .. i am a designer.. and i have 2 macbook pros … One old macbook pro i5 2.3 2011 … and I’ve got recently a MacBook Pro 13" dual i5 2.5 (Mid 2012) …. I use a External hard drive WD PASSAPORT 3.0 that i always used in the 2011 mac… but in the new computer 2012 it does not recognizes…. i put in the usb it reads 2.0 usb devices.. but the wd passaport 3.0 does not.. i passed all work info to a 2.o usb 3.5” external drive and it recognizes in both computers.. i erased the wd passaport .. but even erased.. does not show in the disk utility. the led lights up.. the disc starts working.. but its not recognized by the system..

Lets look a bit deeper here on what is the differences between USB 2.x and USB 3.x Type A connectors. Here’s a good vid on them Explaining USB 3.0 So its possible the cable you are using is only a USB 2.x cable so the extra contacts are just not present. Review the WD Passport drive connector which cable does it need? Here are the two versions of USB 3.x cables you would need

i went to a store.. bought a new cable… One of the connectors was broke… was making a overpower..
