I live on a boat where all electricity is 12V so I bought a non-Apple car adapter on eBay to charge when I’m off the grid. After 2 years, there was a period of few weeks when the charger would not charge but keep the Macbook on. After a week I went to work where I noticed that my original Apple charger would also not charge the Mac. Resetting the SMC and switching off and on the car-(boat) adapter fixed the problem off grid, but charging with Apple chargers still fails (tried multiple). So again, Macbook charges now on a car-adaptor non-Apple charger but does nothing on the grid on an Apple charger. Any suggestions? Do I need to replace magSafe board? (apart from carrying boat battery and solar panel with me)
Check the systems MagSafe connector, is the insulator block melted or the contacts corroded? I would also do the same of the cable ends of both charger cords (boat & Apple), then with no AC/DC power see if the pins compress a bit when pressed. Let us know what you find
