I have an HP 0957-2385 AC to 22V DC power adapter that I suspect has been damaged by lightning. The power light does not go on when plugged into power (I checked input cables & wall socket). I want to open it to see if there is anything blown, e.g. fuse or resistors. I don’t see any obvious screw holes, and I’ve rubbed by nail against the stickers to feel if there could be any hidden under there (one can normally feel either a softness or a ridge –if capped). There are of course an uncountable number of ways to open something if no care is given towards putting it back together again, but I would prefer the least destructive method. Any advice would be welcomed.
The 2 piece of plastic that the top and bottom of a laptop power brick are held together by an adhesive. You need to squeeze some type of liquid in between the seam of the top and bottom to dissolve the adhesive so you can simply open it like a mussel or clam. Here is a video on how to do it. I do have to warn “petrol” is “gasoline”. Use this video at your own risk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a00esZ3B… That being said, a replacement universal charger that has been refurbished can be had for about $12 + tax + shipping. https://www.amazon.com/Targus-Universal-…
Hi @dreart , The case may be plastic welded together. You could try using a paint scraper (with about a 1" wide blade) which has a thin edge to the blade. Placing the blade in the seam of the case, give the scraper a short sharp tap with a hammer. With a bit of luck the case will crack open along the seam,
