My 24" 2.8Ghz Intel iMac Core 2 Duo Extreme’s OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A has failed. On checking various forums it’s symptoms are concurrent with many other users. I now need to replace it, though would be looking for an alternative, like for instance the 12.7 mm PATA 8x Pioneer SuperDrive……..Would this be compatible? I am obviously looking for a more reliable drive, so any advice would be great..
If it’s the same size as your old one and the slot mechanism and location is the same the physical side of things should be OK. Now the next issue has Apple used this player in a different system so the OS has the needed drivers? You could also check with the maker if they supply drivers or are compatible. It can’t hurt to try. Good Luck
The caddy that holds the superdrive in place may or may not fit the drive without modification. There are two small bumps at the front of the caddy, where the superdrive open slot would sit flush. depending on the drive/caddy you may need to snap these off for the drive to fit correctly, otherwise it will push the top of the superdrive down and discs will not be accepted. Hope this helps, Wes
