The CD does not spin. The laser unit and the spinner are brand new. What do I need to replace? I bought the entire disk unit that includes the motor of the spinner the laser lens and the cables included.

The PSTwo has two door sensors. Nothing will spin if it thinks the door is open. The first and least likely to fail is a little black nub right above the power switch. It must be pushed down. The second is way at the back, to the back left of the laser assembly, and is a white or brown plastic box with a tiny plastic nub sticking up. It needs to be down as well. Easiest way to test is to remove the lid altogether, and manually press down both sensors, because you can access them both easily. Have a disc in, turn it on, and press down both sensors. If it works, disable one or both of the sensors, and you should be playing in no time.

I know this is old but I wanted to give more of a complete answer. 1st check if the laser moves when the lid closes or first powered on. If it don’t move then most likely it is the two switches that detect when the lid is closed. The one in the back side of the system near the middle is common to have issues, soldering a wire from one side to the other will work well and I have done it several times. 2nd we should beable to rule out the switches so now the question is, has the system been worked on before. If it has, the ribbon cable for the motor that spins the disk is common to get messed up where it plugs in. 3rd If everything appears to be working correctly but the disk won’t spin, try a CD in it. It is very common that the cause is that the system don’t “see” a disk in the drive and most common media is DVD so that is what wears out. If it reads the CD fine, then most likely it is the laser. 4th Just to note as above, there is a small break for the disks and if that is not released when the lid is shut, it will have problems reading the disk, but it WILL spin still. 5th Once I had a “worm” motor go bad that moves the laser. The case I had it would see the disk but would not read it. Found the laser didn’t move at all. When the system is turned on or the lid is shut, the laser should always move to the center of the disk and a small switch is pressed so the system knows where the laser is at. Also the switch can go bad and continually try to move to laser to the center causing a clicking notice that don’t go away until you shut it off. Hopefully this can help answer some questions for the readers of this question and point them in the correct direction. Source: Fixed and modded PS2s for over 5 years

The lens may have an anti static solder ball that needs to be removed.

There is a mechanical break for the DVD disc. It is released when the cover is lowered. 4 weeks ago my friends came to me with same “disc not spinning issue” and i found that the small plastic lever molded on the cover at the right back side is broken and thus not allowing the break to be released. The spindle motor is gentle so it has no power enough to spin the disc with the break on. I simple removed the break. It helps for disc to stop quicker when cover is open accidentally and its not big deal if u remove the brake. Just wait 5 more seconds before you take the disc off.

If you just bought it then it should be under some sort of manufacturer’s warranty, so I suggest you get it replaced before you start voiding the warranty.

check to see that everything is plugged in properly and if that doesn’t work you may have gotten a bad part

I have a question. My disc will spin but it says disc reading for like 5 seconds and then says disc cant be read. I have a feeling its a different problem then the nubs since its trying to read it. Weird thing though if i play with the laser a little bit and move it all the way back, forward or put it in the middle sometimes it’ll work but then ill shut it off and turn it back on and nothing.????? Help????

I found a little nub on the laser that i think tells the worm gear to stop so the laser doesnt hit the spindle. Well this switch is acting like a kill switch for the entire ps2.

same here, lens, its cable and brand new motor but the disk still won’t spin. the laser moves and I see the red light of the laser. what could be the issue with this %#*@ things.

My PS2 can only spin when there is a CD, but doesn’t read it. The only thing it doesn’t spin is any game discs. Not sure why, is it the laser or something?

Hi :) Ive had a problem for about a year for a certain disc now, when i insert the disc, it reads it, and it would go as far as the “Playstation 2” screen, but after a few seconds after the ps2 screen fades away, the “Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 Disc” with the reddish background appears. What could be the problem?

Reseating the cables of the DVD drive a few times did the trick for me

Hi my old ps2 has not been used for a long time so put game disc in switched it on but laser can’t read it because when I close the door the disc only moves a quarter of an inch can any body help please why won’t it spin please.

Hi my PlayStation 2 hasn’t been used for a couple years but everything looks fine, I think. But the laser won’t move and it won’t spin the disc so it can’t read it. I tried the cd thing, nothing happened.

hello my problem is 4 pcs ps2 slim have 1 of them dvd leser red light is on but dvd does not turn, same track another ps2 slim is running smoothly. What could be the problem? could the processor returning the engine have been corrupted?

Hello! Im new to forum threads, but I need assistance. My SCPH-90001 rotates the disk for half a second, then stops for half a second, then rotates again, then stops, etc. for about 5 seconds or so, then shuts off the laser and rotates normally at full blast for another 5 seconds, then switches the laser back on and rotates very slowly for another 5 seconds before stopping the disk. I removed the brake and depressed both “switches” that detect a closed lid from the inside via tape, yet it doesn’t seem to do any better… It’s from 2007, so I kinda was expecting it to break, but it is my only console, and now that my PC broke as well (though that was on me), I can’t use it to, yo’ know, escape the evils of reality…? Please help me! P. S. It kinda works if I move the laser carriage beforehand, but… No success so far. P. P. S. I’m Brazilian.
