my screen locks up. In order to get back to the main screen I must power the phone off. The button does not work
You mean your home button is broken? Perhaps the pins on the ribbon are not contacting the pads to make contact, you can slightly bend them back up if you take off the screen and flip it over. Do it carefully though.
