This only happens to new photos. Old photos are still ok.

I am not sure with the 12 but you could try the invert colour settings. It use to be in Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Invert Colours. There should be smart invert and classic invert.  If you cannot find it there try settings > Accessibility > Display and text size >
