Hi all, I’ve got a Retina Macbook (A1502) that seems to be totally dead after plugging in a USB to charge my phone. As soon as I plugged the USB cable into the port, it abruptly shut off and now won’t turn on at all. I’ve tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, letting it sit for a week to totally drain the battery, multiple chargers, SMC reset etc. I took it to the Genius Bar and was told this was a known issue but that it would cost 500$ to replace the logic board as I’m out of warranty. I know this stuff can happen, but as a student with little money I can’t afford to fix it right now and I’m a bit peeved that simply plugging in a USB would totally kill the machine (the usb cable wasn’t even one of those really cheap ones!). I was hopeful that it was a minor issue after reading about multiple people with similar issues that were resolved after disconnecting/reconnecting the battery but I don’t seem to be one of the lucky ones. I had a glimmer of hope after the orange light on the charger came on whereas initially there was no light, but still no boot up. Anyways I’d like to ask if there’s anything else I could try or if my only option is a logic board replacement. Thanks for your help.
First try an SMC reset. Here’s how: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 This failing, and all else that may be recommended, and you do find that it needs a logic board, go for a “Flat Rate Repair”. This costs about $357.00 directly from Apple. They FedEx you the box overnight. Total time is four days including shipping. Just call 1-800-MYAPPLE. Just tell them what the machine is doing, don’t mention what you did to get it that way.
Bro, with all types, i just happened to experience the same thing, Just find any way to replug the battery connector, each mac type has it’s own way to replug the battery connector. Mine is this, https://youtu.be/GgzjJ6A455U After you replug the battery connector, dont have to replug the battery itself, only the connector. Voila you will see miracle, your mac will start again, there is nothing broken… maybe only an error occured when you plug something to your USB socket
disconnecting and reconnecting the battery works like a charm was worried that I had fried my board. Thank you so much for this fix and never again will I connect suspicious cables on my MacBook
Guess I’m not so lucky… same issue with mine, disconnected and removed the battery, and still nothing but a black screen. Still have a green power signal on my charger however. Weird :(
