Hello! So, my power button stopped responding. I couldn’t even turn my pc off and now I can’t turn it on. I tried to plug out the power cable, press the button with different pressure and from different angles — no effect. I can’t think of any prior events that could’ve caused that: I didn’t spill water or mechanically damage iMac. It was just staying still on my table. I don’t want to go to service center, maybe someone had the same issue? Because I’m kinda lost in where to start and how to identify the problem. What would you do? And how hard is it to replace the button?
The button rarely fails! In all my years fixing iMacs I’ve only encountered it twice. In both cases the button was pushed in as someone got angry and hammered it in! Unless you did that I would put my money on the power supply! For awhile I was replacing two a week due to power line issues where I was working at the time. As we fixed the systems we installed UPS’s at the desks as the systems where getting zapped by surges and poor grounding. Even after leaving that job I often see one a week killed by poor grounding, surges or lightning. People fail to use even a basic surge protector or check to make sure their outlet and buildings grounding is proper. I’ve also seen peoples outlets cross-wired! Thats when the brass screw of the outlet has the white wire on it and the chrome screw has the black screw so the ground ends up being hot! It doesn’t even need to be the outlet being used by your computer and it may only show up fleetingly as its only when the bad outlet is used and often when the device plugged in shorts the common to ground (often you’ll hear a pop when you plug in the device)
